Marine Conservation in Raja Ampat
The Raja Ampat SEA Centre Foundation Annual Report 2025 highlights a year of community-led marine conservation in Raja Ampat, one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on Earth.
Founded by Papua Explorers in 2017, the Raja Ampat SEA Centre works to protect coral reefs and marine life through a combination of scientific research, environmental education, and community engagement. Our programs aim to strengthen the connection between local communities and the ocean, helping build long-term stewardship of Raja Ampat’s extraordinary marine environment.
The report provides an overview of our work across three core pillars:
Science – Coral Reef Monitoring & Restoration
Our science programs focus on coral reef monitoring, reef restoration, and climate observation in Raja Ampat. Using internationally recognized Reef Check methods, local teams conduct regular reef surveys to track coral health, bleaching, and marine biodiversity.
In 2025, our monitoring and restoration work included:
-
8,000 m² of reef health monitoring area
-
16 reef monitoring sites
-
6 ocean temperature loggers deployed
-
4,033 coral fragments revived through restoration efforts
Education – Building Local Conservation Leaders
Through the Raja Ampat Dive Guide School and youth education programs, SEA Centre helps train the next generation of Papuan marine conservation leaders.
In 2025 our education programs achieved:
